Padum to Lamayuru Trek

This trek is considered one of the toughest trek of Ladakh due to its several passes to be crossed almost every day.

To reach the starting point of trek, we will drive through Indus and Suru valley dominated by Zanskar range and its magnificent twin peaks of Nun and Kun, Reached Padum the distt. headquarter of Zanskar, Due to long winter the valley remain closed for huge part of the year hence the life become tough for the inhabitant, During the 10 days of trek you will explore the northern part of Zanskar and Ladakh, including some of incredible site as of karsha and lingshed monasteries, Palace in ruin and nunnery of Zangala once the capital of kingdom of Zanskar, you will be crossing 7 passes and will appreciate the spectacular extensive landscape and oasis, people living in the valley called Zanskari, grows one crop a year and lives with their cattles.

DAY 1:- Leh to Kargil, 7 to 8hours; 230 km

DAY 5:- Rinam to Pishu (3400 m), 3 hours via Jangla 6 hours; Trek 2
DAY 6:- Pishu to Hanumil (3550 m), 5 hours; Trek 3
DAY 7:- Hanumil to Snertse (4200 m) over Parfila (3900 m), 6 hours; Trek 4
DAY 8:- Snertse to Lingshed (3800 m) over Hanumala (4700 m), 7 hours; Trek 5
DAY 9:- Lingshed to Yulchun Gyra (4500 m), trek starts over Murgum la (4100 m);Trek 6
DAY 10:- Yulchungyra to Phutoksar (3750 m), 7 hours; Trek 7
DAY 11:- Phutoksar to Hanupata (3500 m), 6 hours;Trek 8
DAY 12:- Hanupata to Wanla (3300 m), 5 hours;Trek 9
DAY 13:- Wanla to Lamayuru (3600 m) over Pritink la (3800 m);and drive to leh Trek 10

Full Itinerary



DAY 1:- Leh to Kargil, 7 to 8hours; 230 km
Start early morning from Leh. Kargil is a dist. where the inhabitants are Muslims, (both Shea and Sunni). Kargil is situated in the valley of Suru on the left bank of the Suru River; overnight at the hotel.

DAY 2:- Kargil to Rangdum (3700 m)
Suru, is one of the most beautiful valleys dominated by Nun-Kun peaks. The route goes along the vast stretches of uninhabited land and close to the glacier of Nun-Kun peaks. The broad edelweiss carpeted meadow of Rangdum (Juldu) is the best for camping.

DAY 3:- Rangdum to Padum (3600 m)
After crossing the seemingly endless plain, visit the monastery of Rangdum. Continue over the Pensila (4400 m) the main gateway to Zanskar, providing a spectacular view of Darung-Drung glacier and the chain of Zanskar. The trail goes through the several villages aside the Doada River. Visit Sainy Gompa on the way. Padum an administrative headquarter of Zanskar sub-division of Kargil dist. with the exception of Padum where 40 percent of the population is Muslim and rest are Buddhists; overnight at the camp in Padum.

DAY 4:- Padum to Rinam (3500 m), 6 hours; Trek 1
From Padum head towards the Pipting, then through the dusty plain towards the Doda river; visit the Karsha Monastery, a beautiful Gelugpa monastery dating from the XVth century, in common with the Likkir Gompa in Leh and the Kamoling Gompa, owes allegiance to Kushok Ngari Tsang whose head-quarters are located in Tibet. Continue to the campsite at Rinam, which is out of the village.

DAY 5:- Rinam to Pishu (3400 m), 3 hours via Jangla 6 hours; Trek 2
A flat trail besides the Zanskar river, visit Zangla village an ancient capital of Zanskar; the ruins of the castle and the Nunnery can be visited; a small gompa in the village in family house shifted from the old fort, houses some old Thanka and statues. After visiting this village we will be back to the beautiful campsite of Pishu.

DAY 6:- Pishu to Hanumil (3550 m), 5 hours; Trek 3
Moronic track leading up and down, crossing a bridge over stream, colorful Chorten appear before arriving at the village, explore the Pidmo village. A two hours walk till campsite of Hanumil.

DAY  7:- Hanumil to Snertse (4200 m) over Parfila (3900 m), 6 hours; Trek 4
Trail goes through a cliffy track, gradual climb to Parfila. Steep zigzags descend to the riverside; you can refresh yourself besides the river under Willow shrub. Again dusty and sunny trail will lead to the campsite; occasionally one can see the Ibex (Mountain goat) grazing on the slope in front of the camp.

DAY 8:- Snertse to Lingshed (3800 m) over Hanumala (4700 m), 7 hours; Trek 5
Gradual ascend through gorges, later the valley gets wider. Reached at the top which provides an extensive view of the rugged Himalayan Mountains layered one after one. Long descend to the Lingshed, establish the camp and visit the monastery of Gelugpa sect.

DAY 9:- Lingshed to Yulchun Gyra (4500 m), trek starts over Murgum la (4100 m);Trek 6
One hour easy climb to Murgumla, enjoy the view around, easy descend along the slope to the beautiful Nieraq valley, after passing Gongma and Skiumpata villages a steep ascent to Kuba-la (3800 m) and easy walk to the campsite.

DAY 10:- Yulchungyra to Phutoksar (3750 m), 7 hours; Trek 7
Two hours to reach at the top of Singee la (5000 m), a short descend to the broad valley, herds of Yak can be seen, after several times of river crossing, finally reached at Phutoksar, a splendid village at the base of a huge mountain wall, the campsite out of the village.

DAY 11:- Phutoksar to Hanupata (3500 m), 6 hours;Trek 8
An easy walk in the beginning and a steep climb takes you to Sirsila (4900 m). Descend to the river bank, farmers can be seen cultivating in their fields, Peas and Barley etc. Campsite located before the village on the bank of the stream.

DAY 12:- Hanupata to Wanla (3300 m), 5 hours;Trek 9
Across the village, a steep gorgeous path cuts into the rocks, get out of the gorge and arrive at Franjila village. Pleasant walk through the villages till Wanla, Monastery can be visited at the top of the hill; overnight night in the camp.

DAY 13:- Wanla to Lamayuru (3600 m) over Pritink la (3800 m);and drive to leh Trek 10
Go up to the Shilacong and cross the bridge, follow the broad chhorten than the narrow and dry gorge up to the Pritink la, again descend and cross the small stream, climb to the village of Lamayuru and visit the monastery; drive to leh . Night in Leh.
