RUPSHO- KHARNAK TREK (GYA TO TSOMORIRI)

 The most exciting and the only trek route, which penetrates through the secrets of Rupsho and Kharnak.  This route is characterized by its mild ascends and descends amidst towering peaks and glaciers, over the passes with beautiful over-head views, though the cliffs, along the streams and the beautiful pasture lands splashed amidst rugged landscape inhabited by the nomadic changpas with their heards of Yak and Sheep.  A rare opportunity to enjoy the wildlife of Ladakh, the salt lake (Tsokar).

Full Itinerary

 

DAY 01, LEH TO  GYA (LATO) – 75 Kms.

 

          A comfortable drive on paved road through the villages along the sides of river Indus, Enroute Shey, thiksay and Hemis Monasteries, Camping site is near by a small village with few houses in between cliffs on one side and the barren mountains on the other side (3900 Mtrs).  The serenity of the valley, the cool breeze from the Glaciers and the whisperings of the streams prepares the minds and bodies to appreciate the beauty of nature for the next fourteen days.

 

DAY 02- LATO TO LALUNG BSE:  TREK  BEGINS.

 

          Six hours trekking:  Mildly ascends and encamp at the base of the Lalung-la (4600 Mtr.) beautiful over-head view of snowy peaks.\

 

DY 03- LALUNG  BASE TO NIMALING

 

          Seven hours trekking, crossing Lalung-la (5200 Mtrs.) and encamp on the camping ground in Nimaling (4500 Mtrs.)

 

DAY 04-  NIMALING TO LANGTANGCHAN

 

          Six hours trekking up and down along the stream, crossing the bridge of Thachungtse and turn to the left near upper Hunder.  After crossing two times rivers arrives  at a green pasture  with shepherds grazing sheep. Encamp at (4000 Mtrs.)

 

DAY 05-   LANGTANGCHAN TO KHARNAK

 

          Seven hours trekking through, the valley and crossing the Zalung Karpo-la ( 5200 Mtrs.) from the top a  gorgeous view of Zanskar-range and Glaciers, Encamp at (4000 Mtrs.) near by Kharnak village.  A Beautiful view of Kharnak palavce from the campsite.

 

DAY 06-  KHARNAK TO SORA

 

          Seven hours easy trekking along the Kharnak stream which joins with Kunik and Khar streams from the left side.  Few rivers crossing and arrives at the most exciting place of the whole trek: THE TRINITY JUNCTION” represented by three horrifying cliffs and three streams.  Now, trek in the left valley along the clear water stream, through the trees up to sora valley and encamp at 4200 Mtrs.)

 

DAY 07-  SORA TO DATT

 

          Six hours trekking through the trees along the stream up to Datt village. Encamp at (4270 Mtrs.)

 

DAY 08- DATT TO SPANGCHEN

 

          Eight hours trekking through the wilderness and pasture crossing Tarla pass (4950 Mtrs) .  the source of water for six hours of trek is only a hidden spring before yarla pass wild ass Yak and nomads are seen.  Encamp at (4500 ZMtr.) on a green ground.

 

DAY 09- SPANGCHEN TO SPANGUR

 

          Seven hours trekking, up and down through the wilderness and encamp at (4200 Mtrs.)

 

DAY 10- SPANGUR TO SPANG.

 

          Seven hours trekking up and down through a green valley, crossing the line of control for grazing between Kharnak and Rupsho, Now, the trek is in Rupsho area: Encamp at 4800 Mtrs.

 

DAY 11-  SPANG TO TSOKAR

 

          Five hours easy trekking and encamp on the bank of Tsokar (Salt lake) 4267 Mtrs) Beautiful view of the lake Thukje Monastery far on the other side and the village Nuruchan  on the right side.  The wild ass can be seen grazing on the pasture on the side of the lake.

 

DAY 12 -  TSOKAR TO RACHUNGKARU

 

          Seven hours trekking, through Nuruchan village with fifteen houses and a small monastery, Mildly ascends crossing Rachung pass (4900 Mtrs.) Gorgeous view of Rachungkaru: Looks like a little Tibet with many nomadic changpas, sheep dogs, Yak and sheep with their tents pitched systematically on each sides of a clear whispering brook.  Encamp at (4400 mts.).

 

DAY 13-  RACHUNGKARU TO GYAMA – SUMDO

 

          Seven hours of trekking up and down crossing a pass 4800 mtrs. Beautiful landscape: encamp by a stream on a green patch 4200 mtrs.

 

DAY 14-  GYAMA – SUMDO TO TSOMORIRI

 

          Seven hours of trekking up and down along the stream through a narrow valley and finally arrives at Korzok village beside the lake, TSOMORIRI.   Last camp at (4540 mtrs.) on the bank of the lake.   TsomoririLake   is 28 x 8 Kms. With its crystal clear water changes its colour three times a day.  The lake is an ideal place to watch birds.

 

DAY 15- TSOMORIRI TO LEH (220 Kms.)

 

Early breakfast, time to go around the lake and the village Korzok and leave for Leh.  Almost seven hours drive through wilderness, valley and Chumathang village with Hot spring and runs along the sides of river Indus penetrating through rocky mountains and suddenly opens up in the valley of Leh.
